On Friday 4th October at 7 pm, the first of three screenings of Humberto’ Mauros Rough Diamond (1933) took place with a live performance of the original film score by UFF’s Orquestra Sinfônica Nacional (National Symphony Orchestra). The feature film is part of the BRICS Classics section held at Cine Arte UFF.

Conducted by Thiago Santos, the concert was attended by the University’s Rector, Antonio Cláudio Lucas da Nóbrega, the Vice-Rector, Fábio Passos, the UFF Arts Center Superintendent, Leonardo Guelman, the Festival Coordinator, India Mara Martins, and by curators and guests.

At the end of the presentation, the audience gave the UFF orchestra a standing ovation.

Rough Diamond will be screened again on 5 and 6 October at 10:30 am, with free admission.

The opening ceremony of the 4th BRICS Film Festival took place on Wednesday, 2 October at 8:00 pm, at Cine Arte UFF, Niterói, after the opening of the historic film equipment exhibition Film Technology: from amateur to professional. The event brought together the main representatives of the BRICS film industries and University and government authorities. About an hour before the ceremony began, the façade of the UFF Arts Center building was lighted in green, blue, orange, red, and yellow, to represent Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, respectively.

On Thursday, 3 October, the workshop “Audiovisual relations among the BRICS nations: past, present and future” brought students, professors, and film lovers to Reserva Cultural, Niterói, starting at 9:30 am. In a unique immersion experience, Prof. Stephanie Dennison and Prof. Chris Homewood, from the University of Leeds (UK), offered thought-provoking lectures and debates.

The purpose of the workshop was to present an exploration of the audiovisual contact zones of BRICS film cultures, discussing future directions for cultural exchange among BRICS film industries.

 

On Wednesday, 2 October at 6:00 pm, before the opening ceremony of the 4th BRICS Film Festival, the Film Technology: from amateur to professional exhibition was inaugurated at the UFF Arts Center. Displaying historic film equipment, the exhibition gives the audience the chance to get to know cameras, projectors, sound recorders, and editing equipment.

“One of the key objectives of the exhibition is to reveal the continuous technological changes filmmaking gear underwent throughout film history and to address the transformations of the equipment used to produce so many historic films in recent decades,” explained Rafael de Luna, coordinator of the Audiovisual Preservation University Laboratory (LUPA), at the Department of Film and Video of the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), and curator of the exhibition. LUPA supports teaching, research, and extension activities in Audiovisual Preservation and fosters the safeguarding of amateur cinema in the State of Rio de Janeiro.

The BRICS Audiovisual Preservation Meeting kicked off on Monday (30 September) at Reserva Cultural, Niterói, and continues until 3^rd October. Part of the programme of the 4^th BRICS Film Festival, the event features panels with big names from Brazilian, Russian, Indian, Chinese, and South African film, always followed by a debate with the audience. The event open to the public, free of charge, and participants can register in the first three days from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm. Coordinated by Professor Rafael de Luna Freire, the aim of the meeting is to bring together audiovisual preservation professionals from the BRICS countries to discuss shared challenges and develop future partnerships.

The organization of the 4th BRICS Film Festival informs about the alleged censorship that would have occurred to one of the films that participate in one of the activities foreseen in the programming, informs that the fact is not true.

All itinerant films are kept and even have their own dissemination in a folder that talks about the mechanism of activity and detailed each production. The activity also gained prominence in the festival news, appearing on the’ events website and having been released to the press.

As for the inclusion in the printed catalog of the programming, the edition of this product was focused only on the films that participate in the exhibitions that will be presented in person at the Festival, during the days of the event.

Activities began on Monday 23 September in Niterói

Last Monday 23 September, the 4th BRICS Film Festival, held for the first time in the city of Niterói, State of Rio de Janeiro, kicked off its activities. This first week three courses on South African, Chinese, and Indian Film History are being offered to enrolled students, free of charge. The Russian and Soviet Film History course begins on 30 September.

Foreign lecturers from the BRICS countries are teaching the classes, and simultaneous translation is available. The aim of the courses is to provide an in-depth view of the different eras and styles of each country’s cinema, offering students the opportunity to experience rare films. Kids and adults who love animated films will have an exciting time during the 4th BRICS Film Festival. The event, organised by the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) in cooperation with the City Government of Niterói, will feature a special section dedicated to animated films, with screenings from 7 to 9 October at Cine Arte UFF and Reserva Cultural. The Competition section of the 4th BRICS Film Festival will screen ten films, two from each country – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The international jury, responsible for choosing the best film, has already been selected.

Five film critics and experts were invited to be members of the jury: Martin Botha from South Africa, who will also be teaching the South African film history course during the festival, Qin Xiqing from China, Rita Dutta from India, Kirill Razlogov from Russia, and Susy Freitas from Brazil.

The jury was put together in partnership with the Brazilian Association of Film Critics (Abraccine), created in 2011 to represent hundreds of critics from several Brazilian states, and with the institutional support of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI), a worldwide association of film critics with representation in 50 countries.

Ashish Rajadhyaksha and his encyclopaedia of Indian cinema

Professor Ashish Rajadhyaksha is one of the researchers confirmed to attend the 4th BRICS Film Festival. Rajadhyaksha is one of the leading Indian film specialists and one of the authors of the Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema. Covering films in the major Indian languages, the volume has biographical information on directors, actors, producers, and screenwriters. It also has a timeline with the major landmarks of Indian cinema, as well as an infographic on sound and silent films.

After delving deep into the latest Brazilian productions, the curatorial committee revealed the two feature films selected for the Competition section of the 4^th BRICS Film Festival.

The two titles selected are Filhos de Macunaíma (Sons of Macunaíma), directed by Miguel Antunes Ramos, and Os Jovens Baumann (The Baumann Kids), directed by Bruna Carvalho Almeida.

The curatorial committee comprises the following professors and researchers at UFF’s Department of Film and Video: Reinaldo Cardenuto (Competition curator), Luiz Carlos de Oliveira Júnior, and Lucas Reis.

Following their screenings in the 4^th BRICS Film Festival, the selected features will compete in two Best Film categories, the Jury Award, given by a jury composed of members from all BRICS countries, and the Audience Award.
