The purpose of this bilingual workshop is to present an exploration of the audio-visual contact zones of BRICS film cultures. We will examine, in an accessible and thought-provoking style, the extent to which dialogues between the film cultures of BRICS countries have taken place, what form they have taken, and likely future directions for cultural exchange among BRICS film industries.

The workshop will take place on October 3 and will be free. Further information and instructions for registration will be announced shortly.

For two weeks 16 students will receive filmmaking training focused mostly on Brazilian documentary films. Addressing a whole array of forms and themes, the theoretical training will happen mostly during the first week. The second week will focus on producing their films. By the end of the second week, these pictures will be featured in the Closing Screening. The 40-hour workshop will be conducted by UFF professors.

Audience: Eight foreign students, two from each BRICS nation. Eight Brazilian students, six from UFF, two from other institutions.

Before the official launching of the Festival, four courses on South-African, Chinese, Indian, and Russian and Soviet film history, taught by native lecturers specially invited to the event, will be offered. The intensive courses will be held at Sala Interartes, at UFF’s Institute of Arts and Media, and Reserva Cultural. The courses on South-African, Chinese, and Indian film history will last five days, while the course on Russian and Soviet film history will be a three-day event.

Classes will be taught in English, but simultaneous translation will be available, and will include the exhibition of rare films (subtitled in English). The lecturers will provide an in-depth perspective on the different eras and styles of each country’s cinema, which will be complemented by the BRICS Classics programme.

The courses will be free of charge, and registration will be made available previously.

Participants with a minimum attendance of 75% will be entitled to a certificate. In addition to this, these courses will be offered as elective courses from the Department of Film and Video, for which UFF students can receive credits.

The BRICS Audiovisual Preservation Meeting, held from 30 September to 3 October 2019, will feature panels comprising researchers, moving image archivists, and representatives from film archives from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, always followed by debates with the audience. Simultaneous translation will be available. The event will be open to the public on the first three days: 30 September, 1 October, and 2 October, from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.

The aim of the Meeting is to bring together audiovisual preservation professionals from the BRICS countries to discuss shared challenges and develop future partnerships. The Meeting is directed to anyone interested in the history, memory, and safeguarding of audiovisual productions.

The Meeting will be free of charge, and registration will be made available previously.

The Business Forum, an event held within the programme of the BRICS Film Festival, will be organized by the Municipal Government of Niterói in partnership with UFF.

The Forum will host a series of compelling activities, a meeting with authorities and specialists from different fields of film production from the BRICS member states, the presentation of their main film commissions, as well as seminars for students, professors, and industry professionals.

Among the main topics on the Forum’s agenda we can highlight: a presentation on the workings of each BRICS country film industry; the windows of the film industry and the possibility to work with other countries (coproducing films and selling different formats); the different experiences of film commissions; the importance of going international for Brazilian productions; and the presentation of the Niterói Audiovisual City programme and its importance to the development of the city’s economy.

For the last day of the BRICS Film Industry Forum we have scheduled a meeting to discuss how film and media students and alumni can enter the Brazilian market. The Forum will bring specialists from different fields of film production to talk with students, alumni, researchers, and film professionals. Our aim is to develop a filmmaking hotbed in Niterói to provide continuity to the initiatives put forth by the Fluminense Federal University and the Municipal Government of Niterói in partnership with other public and private agencies.

Using the film equipment collection of UFF’s Department of Film and Video, two exhibitions displaying historic film equipment will be held at Reserva Cultural and Centro de Artes UFF.

Allowing the public to see cameras, projectors, sound recorders, editing equipment, etc., the exhibits will reveal how much technology has changed throughout film history and how filmmaking gear underwent a radical transformation in the last decades.
