Fragment of an Empire tells the story of the Tsarist army soldier Filimonov who gets shell shocked during the WWI, only to regain his conscience more than a decade later, in 1928. Having entirely missed the Soviet Revolution and the developments following it, he finds himself in a strange world, where despite having found his memory, he recognizes nothing. Everything he relies on has been replaced with new symbols and values. Through his eyes we witness the rapid and radical changes brought on by the revolution. Based primarily on the 35mm print from the Filmliga collection held at Eye, this restoration is supplemented with a 35mm nitrate print from the Swiss Cinémathèque, which provided the original Russian intertitles as well as a small number of shots missing from the primary source. Absent titles and continuity have been reproduced based on Russian censor records. The work is completed in 2018 and is a collaboration between the Eye, San Francisco Silent Film Festival and Gosfilmofond of Russia.
