The 4th BRICS Film Festival, held by the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) in cooperation with the City Government of Niterói, will feature a section specially dedicated to films made by film school students from universities across the five countries that make up the group, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Forty short films and one feature film will be screened from 3 to 6 October at Reserva Cultural and in travelling screenings.
“The School Short Films exhibition offers a beautiful set of experimental films free from commercial models, as is usually the case in the film school context,” says Professor Douglas Resende, who is the exhibition curator, along with Mariana Siqueira and Rachel Aranha. The programme is, in part, connected to the Film Residency Programme, another festival event, which was organized by Professor Cezar Migliorin and the three curators of the School Short Films section. “Some students selected for the residency have also had their films selected for the exhibition, so there will be a transit between one activity and the other,” adds Douglas.
International cooperation – The curatorship received fundamental support from the International Association of Film and Television Schools (Centre International de Liaison des Ecoles de Cinéma et de Télévision – CILECT) and from several film professors from the five countries in acquiring the films. “Another important partnership was with production company Balafon, which provided a copy of South African Chronicles for a special screening of this beautiful piece,” says Douglas. The only feature film in the programme, South African Chronicles was produced in South Africa by the Ateliers Varan collective in 1978 and is considered a transformative experience in documentary film teaching. The programme will include two travelling screening sessions, one featuring school films from Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and one featuring UFF students’ films.
